High Availability Options:
Having a good website or moving some applications to the web isn't enough
these days.
Society today has a "right now!", always available attitude. There is zero tolerance
for downtime of any kind.
If you've moved any production applications to a hosted model or run an eCommerce
website downtime means an unacceptable loss of productivity or sales. Day or
night it just has to work flawlessly.
For those of you that are performance minded we have some High Availability options
for you to consider.
- Multi-link / Multi-Homed - a term used to describe 2 network paths
to 1 resource.
In this case we offer 2 unique public IP addresses for the same physical server
or resource.
Each of these IP addresses is on a different carrier's circuit so if 1 data carrier
experiences problems your application is still available via the alternate address
on a different data circuit from another carrier.
- Mirroring - Maintaining an identical copy of your website or hosted
resource using a different name / address.
If 1 site is busy with downloads the 2nd site on a different server can handle the
capacity.
Generally these 2 resources are physically separated onto different servers and
networks.
Two is not a magic number you can have as many mirror copies of your site as you would
like.
- Load Balancing - Adds another feature to Mirroring. Using 2 or
more identical websites or resources Load Balancing dynamically splits requests
for resources between each of the mirrored resources so they are used evenly and
no 1 individual resource is burdened with the majority of requests which appears to
the customer as poor performance. Unlike the traditional mirroring described above
the user does NOT have to click anything to use any of the mirrored sites. They
are automatically and unknowingly directed to the proper resource.
This website actually uses a combination
of all 3 High Availability options:
- The FuzeData site actually resides on 2 physical servers. Mirrored (1 server in
each of our 2 data centers) to keep the data in synch between the two at all times.
- Each physical server is assigned 2 public IP addresses. (1 IP address for each carrier
network.)
- Then all 4 IP addresses are used in a weighted load balance scheme to distribute
the traffic evenly based on the speed of the servers and the individual connections
involved.
- At any given time we can adjust the load balancing priorities within minutes if
there is a problem with either server or any of the carriers effectively routing
traffic away from the problem network or device and pushing it to a network or device
that is running at peak efficiency.
