SSL encryption technology (and TLS, Transport Layer Security) is based on Public
Key Infrastructure certificates to encrypt communications from one endpoint to another.
The client and server communicate over a secure HTTPS channel generally 128 bit
or higher. (128 bit encryption uses a 1024 bit key.) Todays certificates are capable
of up to 256 bit encryption however not all browser clients support the latest technologies
and therefore connect at a lower encryption cipher.
SSL technology is popping up all over the place now often used in combination with
VPN's, Portals, or other solutions.
